WEEK 1
Getting to Know You
us for community and places us in the family of God. That means every person who
interacts with a child—children’s ministers, grandparents, small-group leaders and
volunteers, aunts and uncles, family friends, and other ministry-staff members—has a part
to play in raising disciples.’” (p. xi)
DISCUSS
Describe some of the ways the community of faith helps disciple the children in your sphere
of influence.
Say, “Each of us has a part to play in the discipleship of children, and together we will
discover the many ways we can encourage kids along their discipleship path.”
MAKE A PLAN TO ACT
Say, “Whether you have been following Jesus since childhood or came to belief later in life,
we have all had people who helped us along our discipleship path. As we focus on
becoming more intentional about discipling kids, let us first give thanks for those who have
been an active part of our discipleship journey.”
ACTIVITY
Provide each person with four postcard-sized note cards.
Ask them to consider four people who have encouraged them toward faith in Jesus.
Have them write the name of one person at the top left corner of each card.
Invite the participants to share the names of those they have identified and briefly
describe each person’s role in their discipleship.
Encourage each participant to take the cards home and, if possible, write a note of
thanks to each person and send (mail/deliver) it to them.
Say, “As you reflect on the impact of others in your discipleship, identify one way you could
be more active in the discipleship of a child in the coming week.”
Close in Prayer
Thank God for the names shared and for the people who have been part of the
discipleship of those in attendance.
Ask for wisdom in the coming days to come alongside children and others to encourage
them in their discipleship.
Thank God for his work of transformation in our lives that comes from the process of
discipleship.
Encourage the group members to read Chapter 1 before the next session.
