WEEK 2
Becoming Like Christ
Keeping in mind the preceding background information, as well as the context from page 11
of Raising Disciples, guide a conversation to understand these verses:
Read the account of the same event in Mark 10:13-16. What additional details does
Mark provide?
Review Luke 18:9-14 and note who would have been in the crowd when children were
brought to Jesus. Describe how you imagine the setting for the events of verses 15-17.
Search online for images of “Jesus with the children.” How is this image similar to or
different from how you might imagine this scene?
The word translated as “receive” can also be translated “accept.”[i] How have you observed
little children receiving/accepting things? How does this picture help us understand the
meaning of verse 17?
Consider and Discuss
Say, “Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them (Luke 10:16).
Though today’s society gives a lot of time and attention to children and the years of
childhood, we should be intentional about what we do with that time and attention.”
DISCUSS CHAPTER 1
Say, “In Chapter 1, the author states, ‘Discipleship is a lifelong process, and each stage of
that process is important. But I will argue that the first thirteen years of life are the most
important in the lifelong process of discipleship’ (Raising Disciples, 1).”
What was your reaction when you first read or heard that statement?
Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?
Say, “Though the term discipleship is most commonly used in Christian communities to
mean the process of becoming like Jesus, the author defines discipleship as ‘the process by
which a student becomes more like the person or subject he or she is following’ (Raising
Disciples, 3).”
DISCUSSION ACTIVITY
Ask the group to break up into small groups (up to four people in a group).
Draw a line down the middle of the whiteboard.
Provide a piece of paper and pen/pencil to each group and ask one person to be the
group’s record keeper.
