WEEK 2
Becoming Like Christ
Ask each group to come up with several ideas to answer this question: “What influences
are informing the discipleship of children in today’s society?”
Have each group report to the larger group. Record the collective responses on the left
side of the whiteboard.
Return to the small groups and ask groups to come up several ideas to answer this
question: “What activities, programs, or habits can disciple children to follow Jesus in
today’s society?”
Have each group report to the larger group. Record the collective responses on the right
side of the whiteboard.
Discuss what you notice about the two lists that have been created
Say, “The author suggests that parents and ministry leaders have often focused discipleship
efforts on adolescence and other adults is due to ‘the ability of children to be discipled is
underestimated due to the immaturity of their thinking and choices’ (Raising Disciples, 6).”
In what ways have you or others you know underestimated a child’s ability to be discipled?
What would Jesus say to those who underestimate a child’s ability?
Make a Plan to Act
Say, “Whether you are fully convinced of the statement ‘the first thirteen years of life are the
most important for discipleship’ we can hopefully all agree that there are opportunities for all
of us to more intentionally disciple children during these formative years. At the same time,
we can be reminded we are all in the ongoing process of discipleship and can be giving
more of our attention to Christ in our lives.”
ACTIVITY
Provide each person with a piece of paper and pen/pencil.
Ask them to briefly answer the following questions: What or who do you think is
contributing to your discipleship? Your family’s discipleship? Your child’s discipleship?
Ask them to create a chart or map of the weekly schedule for themselves, their family, or
one child in their life. (Encourage members to start this activity, but they may need to
complete the activity following the group meeting.)
Ask group members to share how their answers to the original questions are changing
as they work on their chart or map started.
