WEEK 3
The Discipleship Map
Identify all the phrases in this section of Scripture that describe the lack of
independence or self-preservation.
Read Luke 9:18-20. Why do you think Jesus’s words follow Peter’s confession?
Read Luke 9:21-22. How does Jesus’s prediction connect to his call to discipleship in
verses 23-26?
Read Luke 9:57-62. How do these three calls to follow further illustrate verses 23-26?
Jesus raises the level of expectations for the twelve disciples. How does this translate to
children, specifically in the first thirteen years of life?
Consider and Discuss
Say, “Whenever you set out on a journey, you want to have the destination in mind. Think
back to our earlier discussion about favorite vacation spots. In every case, you needed to
know where you were going so you knew how to get there. The same is true of the spiritual
life. Jesus’s words to the disciples helps us to define the destination, but we don’t begin our
journey at the end. Instead, our life of discipleship begins in infancy, and the first thirteen
years of life can help set a child on the right path toward Him.”
DISCUSS CHAPTER 2
Say, “In Chapter 2, the author provides a seven-stage discipleship map—one stage for
every two years of life.” (Hand out a copy of the discipleship map—Appendix C.)
Review the seven stages of the map.
If participants were asked to briefly summarize each age-level, have them provide
an overview of that stage of development.
Emphasize the discipleship direction/marker for each age.
Ask parents with children in a particular stage to describe how their child matches the
description provided. For groups with members without children ages 0-13, have them
respond based on their experiences with children.
In what ways do your child or children match the description provided?
Did you have any “aha” moments as a different stage of development was
described?
