WEEK 4
Studying God’s Word
ENGAGE SCRIPTURE
Read Luke 8:4-15
Keeping in mind the preceding background information, as well as the context on pages 60
and 66-67 of Raising Disciples, use the “Five W’s and an H” Bible study pattern to guide a
conversation about these verses:
Who is telling this story? Who heard this story? Who is in the story?
What is happening when Jesus begins the story? What happens in the story? What
does Jesus say this story means?
When does Jesus tell this story? (Look for clues in the chapters before and after this
story to locate when in Jesus’ earthly ministry he told this story. You can also use a
“Harmony of the Gospels” resource to research this question further.)
Where is this story told? (Use a Bible encyclopedia or search for images online of a
farmer in the first-century Galilee to get an idea of what Jesus describes in this story.)
Why does Jesus tell this parable?
How does this story help us know more about God? How should we live differently
because of this story?
After completing the pattern, an additional question can help identify if there is a need for
further information: What is confusing or needs further explanation to understand this story?
What resources could we use to help us in understanding?
Consider and Discuss
Say, “Jesus told the parable of the Sower and the Seeds to illustrate his desire for his
disciples and for us today to ‘hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.’
(Luke 8:15) In the midst of everything else our children are learning, let’s discuss how we
are helping them to learn and understand God’s Word.”
Discuss Chapter 3
Say, “In Chapter 3, the author suggests that ‘many adults do not feel equipped to teach the
Bible to children or help children learn how to study and interpret Scripture’ (Raising
Disciples, 43).”
What fears do you have about teaching your children how to learn and study God’s Word?
