WEEK 4
Studying God’s Word
Say, “To take some steps in overcoming those fears, the author provides four ways that
parents can guide their children in creating good soil for the Word of God to be planted.”
Introduce the four key sections from the chapter:
The Story of God (Raising Disciples, 43-44)
God’s Big Story (pp. 44-45)
Incremental, Age-Appropriate Learning (pp. 46-54)
From Listening to Bible Stories to Becoming Bible Students (pp. 55-62)
Divide the small group into four groups (if you only have enough participants for three
groups, have the first group combine the first two principles).
Ask each group to review one of the sections of the chapter.
During their review, ask each individual to identify one idea they could implement with
their child(ren).
Record the ideas on a whiteboard.
Ask the group if anyone identified ideas they could implement in their own personal
Bible study and, if so, if they are willing to share with the group.
SHARE RESOURCE IDEAS
Say, “The author provided a list of potential resources to help you and your family with
studying scripture (Appendix B), but there are a number of other resources available.”
Ask group members to share any resources (reference books, websites, videos, etc.)
that they use for personal or family Bible study.
Add to this list any resources that your church community provides to partner with
parents.
Create a list of these resources on a whiteboard. Ask someone to record these
resources and provide the list to the group via text or email after the session.
Make a Plan to Act
Say, “As the author reminds us, the Bible can be ‘overwhelming’ with sixty-six books that
include more than thirty-one thousand verses. But rather than becoming overwhelmed by all
that the Bible teaches and all the options for engaging in Scripture, let’s remember: our
focus should be laying a foundation of truth (Hebrews 5:12) so that children will learn to
‘Love the Lord your God’ (Deuteronomy 6:5). No matter which ideas of studying the Bible
we might introduce to our children, focusing on helping them to learn about God so that they
might fall in love with God will lead them on the path toward spiritual maturity.”
