WEEK 5
Vocabulary of Faith
Say, “With this goal in mind, we can introduce appropriate vocabulary words and ask
questions as a child continues to learn and grow. The author provides an example of
helping a child develop an understanding of more complex or abstract words through the
practice of scaffolding.”
ACTIVITY
Review the paragraph about scaffolding on page 78 in Raising Disciples and the
example of understanding the word grace.
Choose a word from the 11-12 Years row of the Faith Vocabulary Column (Raising
Disciples, 77).
Work together to identify different words that could be introduced at earlier ages to help
prepare them to learn a more advanced word. (It may help to use a whiteboard to work
together on this activity.)
Say, “There are words on this list that even an adult may not fully comprehend, but the more
frequently we use these words with our children, the more comfortable they will be with this
vocabulary. Our prayer is that as their vocabulary grows and matures, so will their faith and
belief in the God who is the author of these words.”
Make a Plan to Act
Say, “Embracing questions is a way to help a child practice using their vocabulary of faith
and also learn how they are growing in their understanding.”
REFLECT AND DISCUSS
Review the “Questions and Prompts for Building a Faith Vocabulary” infographic on pages
82-83 of Raising Disciples.
Read through the questions and identify two or three questions you could ask your
child(ren) in the coming week.
Identify a day and time that you could begin a conversation with your child(ren).
