WEEK 6
Spiritual Practices
Worship (Your Kingdom come). This is followed by three requests: the first recognizes that
God provides all needs and asks for His provision each day; the second recognizes God’s
forgiveness and acknowledges that a person who has been forgiven is to be a person who
forgives others; the third is a request for spiritual protection to avoid sin and the power of
sin.
ENGAGE SCRIPTURE
Read Luke 11:1-4
Keeping in mind the preceding background information, as well as the context on pages
110-111 of Raising Disciples, guide a conversation to understand these verses:
Hand out the printed copy of the prayer for each participant.
Ask participants how familiar they are with this prayer. If your community prays this on a
regular basis, discuss the impact of praying it with others.
Discuss why the twelve disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.
Identify each of the sections of the prayer: the direct address, the two declarations, and
the three requests.
Have participants rewrite the prayer in their own words, following the model.
Ask participants to share their revisions.
Say, “The disciples learned to pray, as well as worship, serve, give, and practice other
spiritual disciplines through observing Jesus’s actions, listening to his instructions, and
participating alongside him. Children need similar experiences. They need to observe others
practicing spiritual disciplines, be instructed in the practices, and practice alongside others.”
Consider and Discuss
DISCUSS CHAPTER 5
Say, “In Chapter 5, the author begins by reminding us that spiritual disciplines or habits
aren’t activities to earn God’s favor. ‘Spiritual habits—also called Christian disciplines or
spiritual practices—are activities to create space for God to do His work to form us into the
image of Christ. Christians undertake spiritual practices over the course of their lives, not
only because it’s an act of obedience to God but also because it cultivates a deeper
relationship with Him’ (Raising Disciples, 93).”
ACTIVITY
Hand out a copy of the document with the list of the nine spiritual practices described in this
chapter. (Reminder that two additional practices—Bible study and service—are discussed in
