WEEK 7
Identity in Christ
Review and Discuss
Write the three common questions on the whiteboard: Who am I? Where do I fit in?
What is my purpose?
Under each question, identify some ways the current culture attempts to answer each
question outside of a Christ-centered perspective.
Review the following biblical texts and identify how Scripture answers these questions: John
3:16; 1 John 4:19; Romans 8:39; Proverbs 3:11-12; 1 John 1:9; Genesis 1:27, 28; Genesis
9:6
What additional questions do you think your child is struggling with in relationship to
forming their identity? Create a list on the whiteboard.
Review this list and discuss if these questions are related to the three common
questions.
Discuss how parents and the community of faith can work together to encourage a
Christ-centered identity in their children.
Say, “Our identity formation begins in infancy as we interact with our parents and
caregivers, family, and community. Each of us can remind every child that they are loved by
God, a child of God created in His image to love God and others. No child is too young for
us to begin this practice, and if we want them to truly believe, we cannot say it often
enough.”
Make a Plan to Act
Say, “Each child is uniquely created by God. Therefore, how they need to be encouraged or
the truth they need to be reminded of will differ for each child.”
REFLECT
Provide each member with a notecard and pen/pencil.
Review the “Identity Stages of Belief in Childhood” infographic on pages 126-127 of
Raising Disciples.
For each child in your life, how could you encourage them to find their identity in Christ?
Is there a statement from this list you need to remind them of or affirm for them?
Do you find them struggling with believing one of these statements?
They are loved by God.
They are a child of God and created in His image.
Their purpose is to love God and others.
