INTRODUCTION
TH E S TO N E S S TO RY LI N E
STONES ARE SOME OF the most indestructible things in nature. Even
when they are destroyed—beaten by weather, ground down, battered, worn by
time—they re-form and make something new. They are still stone. They endure.
Perhaps that’s why in Scripture, stones are such a profound sign of God’s
faithfulness. Again and again, when stones show up in the Bible, we see God proving himself to be faithful, loyal in his love, powerful, sacrificial, and purposeful.
And here’s the thing: God’s faithfulness was not—and is not—dependent on
the people he was in relationship with. Many of those we’ll read about in this
study struggled with feeling unworthy of God’s grace. Doubted whether God was
as forgiving as he says. Yearned to experience progress in their faith walks. Took
steps of obedience when the odds were against them. And needed salvation from
their sins. I find parts of my own story in theirs because I, too, am searching for
worthiness, forgiveness, progress, rescue, and purpose.
